This book is a wonderful assest to both Christian political thought and anarchist thought. Followers of Christ will discover the merits of Christian Anarchism and anarchists' basis in a very unique (and in my opinion, correct) reading of Biblical texts.

Secular anarchists will see how the teaching of Christ can assist in attaining their goal Cited by: 8. Christian Anarchy is a very interesting book discussing the politics of the bible and how Christians should go about dealing with political institutions of power.

These include traditional Arky's such as governments, but also "arkys" such as churches and other "adversarial" organizations/5(2). I highly recommend Ellers quirky but powerful book. Be warned, while the first four and last two chapters of Christian Anarchy are worth the price of the book, the work bogs down in between, when Eller is very intent on convincing us that Karl Barth and Soren Kierkegaard were anarchists as he defines the term/5.

There is a great deal in Paul’s letters which seems to be interrelated with Hellenistic philosophical concepts. We will briefly survey the two main categories of Hellenistic thought which are represented in the Pauline corpus, extract the associated theological implications, and explore ideas for their application in contemporary culture.

A far-ranging study of the Christian relationship to the state and all wordly powers, this book is as provocative as its unusual title. "Christian Anarchy” says Vernard Eller, "is the faith in God's primacy as sovereign Lord and orderer of history which is given such weight that all the big claims of self-confident human scheming and power-play become sheer distraction.

God is an Anarchist Christian Anarchy. Written by Darrell Anderson. To the typical Christian the term Christian anarchy is an oxymoron, a strange contradiction of words.

Many Christians are taught to obey the statist rulers and authority. Indeed, Christians often are taught that the Bible demands obedience to political rulers. "Anarchy" ("unarkyness"), it follows, is simply the state of being unimpressed with, disinterested in, skeptical of; nonchalant toward, and uninfluenced by the highfalutin claims of any and all arkys.

And "Christian Anarchy"--the special topic of this book--is a Christianly motivated "unarkyness.". Ammon Hennacy, "Christian Anarchism" in The Book of Ammon () An anarchist is someone who doesn't need a cop to make him behave. This book has one major theme, a fairly specific context and an overriding thesis. The theme is the Christian’s responsibility in the face of political power.

The context is the alleged claim by most Christians who become involved in political action (whether from a right-wing or left-wing perspective, but mainly the latter) that they could operate power in society more righteously.

Christian anarchism has been around for at least as long as “secular” anarchism. The existing literature cites Leo Tolstoy as its most famous (sometimes even as the only) proponent, but there are many others, such as Jacques Ellul, Vernard Eller, Dave Andrews or the people associated with the Catholic Worker movement.

What I am doing (in a TWO-PAGE RESPONSE) is to indicate that I think the general aspiration of Christian anarchy is fine—it wants to make a positive difference in the world by the light of what it understands to be the gospel—but it is going about this good intention in the wrong way.

Thus, as a Christian anarchist, he comes close to occupying a class of his own (though not quite all his own). I plan to write at greater length about Tolstoy’s fascinating book for a future “Etceteras” feature in The Independent Review.

Aside from its interest as a manifesto for Christian pacifism and anarchism, the book contains many. Anarchy and Christianity () by Jacques Ellul.
